Fire officials said that firefighters were dispatched to the building on South 1st Avenue in Mount Vernon at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28. Crews were at the scene in minutes, and were able to contain the fire to just one apartment.
A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released. A woman was taken from the kitchen of the apartment in cardiac arrest, and firefighters performed CPR until paramedics could transport her to Mount Vernon Hospital. Her condition was not available on Tuesday.
The cause of the fire is under detection, and fire officials noted that there were smoke detectors in the apartment, but they failed to activate. According to reports, as many as a dozen people were evacuated from the home and temporarily left out in the cold.
